DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SURGERY

The Department of General Surgery with its dedicated and experienced team of faculty members is engaged in delivering high quality and comprehensive surgical care to the patients including emergency services; training undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in the surgical discipline; and carry out research activities related to the field of surgery as well as inter-disciplinary areas. Besides, the department has fully operational specialty clinics comprising of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Uro-surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Surgical Gastro-enterology and Oncosurgery.

The Department is located in the ‘B-Block’ of People’s Hospital, having indoor capacity of 240 beds with a dedicated and well-equipped Surgical Intensive Care Unit. There are six state-of-the art operation theatres that include three fully modular major theatres and one each for emergency, septic and minor surgeries. All are equipped with modern equipment and gadgets, including High-end Laparoscope sets, Upper & Lower GI Endoscopes and Endo-urology sets. Recently 100-watt LASER has been added to our list of armamentaria. We always strive to set the standard of excellence in providing surgical care to the patients that is holistic, modern and evidence based as well as cost-effective.

The Department is actively engaged in undergraduate teaching program for MBBS students based on the newly inducted Competency Based Medical Education 2019, that includes surgical rotation postings, bed-side teaching, inter-active lectures, small group discussions, DOAP sessions and tutorials. The goal is to make an under-graduate student acquire the necessary competency to understand the structural and functional basis, principles of diagnosis and management of common surgical problems.

The post-graduate program includes M.S. in General Surgery, with annual intake of 10 students. It is a robust, residency based surgical training program that aims to nurture and produce next generation of surgical leaders. Our residents rotate in a variety of clinical settings through a unit system, including trauma, intensive and critical care, radiology, pathology as well as other basic science departments. As part of their teaching-learning program, they are part of daily consultant and grand rounds, clinical case discussions, periodic didactic lectures, seminars, journal reviews, death audits and inter-departmental meetings. All residents are exposed to a large number of cases across all aspects of general surgery as well as other surgical sub-specialties. They are also given the duty of teaching undergraduate students and carry out mandatory research work in the form of dissertation. They are encouraged to regularly participate in state and national level conferences and CMEs as delegates and for scientific presentations. Of late, the department has also added a fully functional Skill Lab having 02 Endo-trainer sets to enhance the basic laparoscopic skills of the surgical trainees.

Department has its own library with a collection of wide range of reference books, national and international journals, including an online subscription of EBSCO Host containing multitude of journals from various medical and surgical fields. The Department is also engaged in active research with one of a faculty being chief investigator for externally funded research projects. There is also a state-of-the-art Central Research Laboratory of the Institute, facility of which can always be utilized by faculties and resident students.
