DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

Medical Microbiology is an ever-evolving dynamic science. It is a specialized branch of microbiology which deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. The microorganisms involved in infectious diseases are diverse ranging from; Bacteria, Fungi, Parasite and Viruses and all of them pose a potential health risk to individuals and the community.

Department of Microbiology was established in the year 2005 to provide holistic and latest knowledge and practical training to the undergraduate, post graduate students Medical MSc, and PhD admitted to People’s College of Medical Sciences and Research Centre and to provide committed diagnostic care to the patients attending People’s Hospital.

Department of Microbiology is a multidisciplinary unit consisting of Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Serology and Parasitology laboratory along with Facilitated Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (FICTC). It is notable that the Virology laboratory is NABL accredited for both Truenat micro RT PCR and RT PCR (Open System).

The Microbiology laboratory is equipped with state of the art diagnostic facilities like Automated blood culture system (BacTAlert), Automated identification and Antimicrobial susceptibility testing system (Mini ATB), Fluorescent microscope along with other conventional microbiological tools for diagnostic services.

The Faculty of the department is actively involved in Hospital Infection Control. The major components of activities undertaken by the department are manpower development through training for Nurses to generate a backup of infection control team Nurses and monitoring of Antimicrobial resistant organisms.

The Department actively involves in teaching not only the MBBS students but also, MSc, Nursing and Paramedical students.

The department has a well- equipped practical laboratory for UG and PG teaching. The Research laboratory of the department has state-of-art equipment catering to the research activities in the department.

The museum of the department houses various models, charts and specimen which aid in teaching the students. There are 3 demonstration rooms attached to the department as well as a seminar-cum-library with a host of books – new and old, journals and ebooks, Practical Hall.
