1. Dr. P.R. Suresh
presented the paper entitled “Role of Ergonomics in Rehabilitation of subjects with Parkinson’s disease” in the scientific session of Disability & Design Ergonomics at HWWE 2009 on 19th Dec. 2009.
- Significance of study- This study will demonstrate the role of Ergonomics and Rehabilitation in Parkinson’s disease.
- HYPOTHESIS- The study is based on null hypothesis which started as “Ergonomics Modification at living place is not significant in overcoming functional disability of parkinsonism patient”.
- METHODOLOGY-
- The study was conducted on 11 subjects of Parkinson’s diseases chosen from the physiotherapy O.P.Ds of People’s Hospital and were advised to be on regular physiotherapy, medical treatment along with Ergonomicsinterventions.
- Neuro- Physiotherapy assessment charts, Hoen and Yahr scale, UPDRS (unified Parkinson disease rating scale), Barthel Index, Daily Activity Log.
- Informal experimental design :- Before & after without control group.
- Subjects were selected through purposive Sampling and were assisted & trained at their living place 3 times a week for 4 week.
- The subjects had under gone pre test before the ergonomics advices and modifications on UPDRS (unified Parkinson disease rating scale) and, Barthel Index.
- After the duration of 4 weeks all the above subjects had under gone post test on the same scale and the data are collected for advance analysis.
- The selected items of UPDRS (unified Parkinson disease rating scale) is used for the study and the total score of UPDRS is 48. The Barthel Index had the total score of 100 out of 10 items. Both the scale measure the freedom/level of functional capabilities in neurological disorders and is widely used in Parkinson’s patient.
- The outcome strongly favors the ergonomics interventions as an effective tool in the management of Parkinsonism.
2. Vaibhav Kapre presented the paper entitled by “A Comparative study of flow & volume oriented incentive spirometry , After upper abdominal surgery using PFT studies” in the scientific session of 48th annual conference of Indian association of Physiotherapist (IAP), Manglore branch on 23rd jan 2010.
STUDY DESIGN
- Experimental study design was adopted for the study. 40 (20 in group 1 & 20 in group 2) patients from male surgery ward who had planned for upper abdominal surgery were randomly selected. Systemic random sampling method is used to divide the patients into 2 groups.
- PROCEDURE-
- 40 patients from male surgery ward who had planned for upper abdominal surgery were randomly selected. Before investigation of IS post operative parameters of FVC, IC, & MVV was investigated for any restrictive condition .
- Group 1 (Flow oriented Spiro meter) v/s Group 2- (Volume oriented spirometer)
